Prospecting Project : Kevin Love

We are a quarter of the way into the NBA season and things are shaping up nicely prospecting wise. I had a tough time choosing who to prospect this year but the numbers, and the cards, made my choice a hell of a lot easier.

Kevin Love is having a MONSTER season for a really small market team (à la Kevin Garnett some years ago). Conventional wisdom will advise to stay away from such a small market team but Love, sooner rather than later, will be an All-Star. Either for the Wolves or another team, Kevin Love will breakout really soon (nest year top) and now is the time to gather as much of his rookies as possible.

So my targets are :

  • Any and all Bowman Chrome and Topss Chrome Rookies. The SP and low numbered refractors will be a little more expansive but the base one will go for cheap (between 2$ and 5$) and will fetch around 7-10$ anytime soon (I believe)
  • On card autos and, if possible, on card rookie autos (Exquisite maybe if the price is right)
  • Really low numbered variation (10 or less) or any year.
  • Maybe some nice looking patch (low priority)

My budget, for this, is no more than 20$ a card. I know it is low but I’m running on a holiday budget right now with the family and I don’t believe that Love is a fair buy over the 20$ mark (except on High-End autos).

I will gather as much as possible until February (early) and maybe get some Chromes graded. If Love is in the All-Star talk, maybe I could flip some Graded Rookies for a good profit. Otherwise, I’ll just sit on them until next season and maybe the pre-season buzz will catch around Love or, I’m pretty sure, he’ll continue his stellar play to an all-star level.

Also, UCLA as a strong hobby following so this is all good investment wise.

On a side note, maybe some Rookie Lots will include Russell Westbrook and this is a big bonus in the buying project since Westbrook is a great prospect as well, probably better than Love (but more expansive). It’s all about ROI (Return on Investment) here, no disregards for Westbrook.

I will update this post with cards purchased.
