NBA Draft – The Canadian Connection

Thursday night was the 2011 NBA Draft and it was a great night for Canadian basket-ball fanatics, two players from the land up north got drafted in the first round and one in the Top 5, something that never ever happened. It’s about time we get some respect on the hoop scene and I am thrilled about the idea of collecting these two Texas guys from Ontario.

Tristan Thompson
4 Overall pick | Cleveland Cavaliers
Freshman out of Texas

Thompson is a huge volume scorer, a bit undersized for the four in the NBA but still a beast around the offensive rim and he can get the ball in from anywhere on the floor. Fans in Cleveland will love the motor and the scoring versatility but he comes in a system crowded at his position with JJ Hickson and Antwan Jamison. But still, Thompson is a great talent, great scorer and the hobby should catch up really fast to him.

Cory Joseph
29th Overall pick | San Antonio Spurs
Freshman out of Texas

Joseph is a bit of a reach for a scoring combo guard but the Spurs organization sees a little bit of George Hill (whom they traded) in Joseph and we know the people in San Antonio have a nose for late draft steal (see Dajuan Blair, Ginobili, Hill, etc…)  I love the speed of Joseph and is ability to get to the rim but I don’t see a starter in the NBA here. Still, role players are valuable and that means his cards should come on the cheap end, which is always good for my wallett.

So that was the draft for me and Toroton reached for an International prospect, so, going to have to be patient here.

How was the draft for your team? Happy? Boring? Surprising?

I was pretty excited about this draft as well. I realize that it’s a bit of a weak draft year but it’s still great to see two Canadians go in the first round.

I had no idea that Tristan was projected to go that high.
